Maid in Manhattan... (2002)

The story is start with a maid named Marissa (Jennifer Lopez) gets a chance to dress a very expensive guest’s clothes, and just when a handsome political candidate (Ralph Fiennes) walks in. He finds she is so attractive and pursues her, while he thinks she is also a guest in the hotel, an attractive, unique and beautiful young woman. They fall in love soon.
Marissa is a young woman work in a hotel as maid for living; she is a single mother with a son. She works in the bottom of the hotel but she dreams to be a manager. One day when she got a chance to wear a guest’s cloth, without the guest’s knowledge, of course, Chris, the candidate, found her, he's bowled over and pursues her; he's initially drawn to her gorgeous good looks but soon comes to appreciate her honesty and common sense. Of course, she can't let him know that she's only a maid.
When her manager found her that she is the mysterious girl that date with the candidate, he told her to end up the relationship and tell him everything at the party night. She did it, at least, she tried. But after she goes there, she can’t control herself. She wants to leave, but Chris convinced her, “if this is the last night we have, then stay”. When she is discovered by her senior manager that she is the one that steal the guest’s cloth, it’s the time that Chris found she’s the maid. She was fired and left Chris, by covering her real feeling to him. But this is not the end, the end is he can’t get over her and at last they make it and live a happy life.
This is another movie about Cinderella fairy tale. I have to say, it’s superficial to some extent for today’s urban romance, although it’s about love, love without class, without status, and love can conquer everything.

A love song for Bobby Long... (2004)
Based on the tragic life of the young Purslane Will, who after the death of her mother is faced to return to a life she thought was well and truly in her past. After leaving her abusive boyfriend, Pursy then arrives back to her house in New Orleans where she finds it inhabited with two alcoholic men. Bobby Long who is an ex-literature professor and his teaching assistant Lawson soon realise they have been granted a opportunity to redeem themselves by helping Pursy. This however, is easier said then done as Pursy is not a typical 18 year old girl, having been involved and surrounded by drugs, alcohol and abuse since birth.
After living together in Lorrain’s house, a sense of family becomes apparent. But similar to all families there are constant struggles facing the three. Lies and betrayal force Pursy to take drastic measures against her new family. But little does she know there is no escaping them once the truth is revealed.
I would rate this film 4 out of 5, for its originality and its refreshingly realistic story. Played exceptionally well by John Travolta and Scarlett Johansson. I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a unique drama.

Never Been Kissed (1999)
- ‘Some things are worth waiting for’
She’s Never Been Hip, She’s Never Been Cool, and She’s Never Been In until now….
“That thing. That moment. You kiss someone and it's like the world around you gets all hazy and the only thing in focus is you and this other person and you know that one person is the person you're meant to be kissing for the rest of your life...”Look its Josie Geller, 25, cute, blonde, and has never been kissed. In the opening scene we hear the chanting of a crowd…Wow could this be the ending of the movie already??? No it’s only just the beginning of something great.
After suffering from an atrocious high school experience and being victimised through bullying, name calling, and egg throwing. Scaring Josie Geller (Drew Barrymore) for life. At 25 she is now the youngest and most successful copy editor working at the Chicago Sun-Times, with aspirations of one day becoming a reporter. Josie is unexpectedly offered a promotion that turns her life upside down -been granted a second chance to relive her teenage years, to finally fit in and undergo that high school experience she has longed for and been neglected from. She enrols in her old high school as an undercover journalist as part of her research for a story. What she expects to find is a story but what she ends up finding is her self wrapped up with a whole heap of love.
Drew Barrymore excels as her character. She is the major highlight of the film. The film uses effective camera techniques in order to assert certain emotions and create meaning to viewers. It is through recursive flash backs of Josie’s terrorised past schooling that we as the audience begin to relate and sympathise with the character.
‘Never Been Kissed,’ shows that high school is the epitome of our developmental years. It depicts the highlights of our school years and how much of it affects the rest of our lives.
Described as ‘a comedy with class’, it is prefect for viewers wanting a laugh and a little romance. It’s perfect for people who have never truly been kissed, and who are still waiting for that right person to give them the wet, sloppy warm feeling of tongues intermingling, reassuring them that their search for true love is over.
For its originality, suspense, and uproarious nature I give this film a rating of 3.5 out of 5.

The girl with the dragon tattoo... (2009)
The film is based on the Swedish novel by Stieg Larsson. Larsson’s themes of sexual violence were inspired by actual past experiences of witnessing a young girl being ganged raped at a very young age. These experiences directly influence characterisation of the protagonist Lisbeth.
The plot of this film is extremely intricate, and the subtitles mean that constant concentration is required in order to follow what is happening. Lisbeth’s character gives us small insights into her damaged past and present life. Including gang attacks and sexual harassment. Her main role in the film is to assist the journalist Mikael Blomkvist in his research of a missing girl, which leads them into a twisted world of serial killing.
With her exceptional hacking skills and implied photographic memory. Lisbeth was able to play a key role in uncovering the truth behind both the missing girl and the person who framed her friend Mikael.
This film is intriguing but heavy. If you are interested in movies that keep you constantly guessing and are tolerant to confronting themes then you may enjoy this movie. I would rate this 4 out 5.

cold mountain

"Cold Mountain" tells the story of a seriously wounded Confederate soldier named Inman (Law) who struggles on a perilous journey to get back home to Cold Mountain, North Carolina, as well as to Ada (Kidman), the woman he left behind before going off to fight in the Civil War. Along the way, he meets a long line of interesting and colorful characters. In his absence, Ada--with the help of a young scrappy drifter named Ruby--is desperately trying to hold onto the farm of her deceased missionary father.
At Cold Mountain, a small town in North Carolina, arrive a father and a daughter. Inman meets Ada, though they speak little. At the onset of war between the North and the South, Inman leaves for the war with the first kiss implanted on Ada's lips. The war lasts for 3 long years. The South has lost it, and the soldiers who try to return are considered traitors and are ordered to be killed by the home-guards. Inman embarks on the journey to return to Ada. Through dangerous encounters, Inman returns to Ada to be with her for only a day. The home-guards who have ruthlessly killed the families that stayed behind to claim their property, are set to die through Inman's hands. He loses his life too. Ada gives birth to a baby girl and continues to live in Cold Mountain.
This Civil War saga addresses romance, friendship, and the ravages of war--both in the field and on the home front. Captured the horrors of war for both those fighting it, and for those left behind, this is a tale of hope, longing, redemption, second chances, and faith.

The Notebook (2004)
How Far Would You Go For The One You Love…
“There are people who are afraid to fall in love as they don’t want to get hurt but can you control yourself when the cupids bow hits you?”
Every one has a sudden doubt in their mind when it deals with love but almost everyone can not bare the uneasy tension and unescapable feeling of butterflies in their stomach, mind drift, that feeling of completeness and becoming speechless... after just meeting that special someone that took your breathe away. The unescapable hard thump heart beat rising, the mind drifts to other dimensions, and the stuttering speech leaves you helpless and defenceless around them.
Set in the 1940’s , this romantic drama film based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks is centrally focused by the narrated elderly codger who reads to a vulnerable old woman, who has been robbed of her memories by Alzheimer’s.
From a faded notebook, the story of two young lovers is told, unfolding past memories and true events undertaken by them both. It is through the old codger’s words that bring to life the story about the young couple’s (Allie Hamilton and Noah Calhoun) adventures together. Reading slowly becomes reliving. Their journey speaks about their enforced separation by her disapproving parents, to issues of socioeconomic difference and the commencement of World War II. Despite having taken separate paths and separate lives they are reunited by destiny, and once again their love for each other grows bigger than ever before. Transported back to present day whereby Allie has lost her memory, his words give her the guidance and chance to relive her past, to remember who she is and to reawaken the spark (love) they once shared. In hopes that someday, by reading to her she will regain her memory, and fall back in love with him once again.
"The story of our lives,.. Read this to me, and I'll come back to you."
I found this movie to be very visually pleasing; having a lot of lush vegetation and landscapes and filled with rich saturated colours. ‘The Notebook’ can be said to be; thoughtful, heart throbbing and emotionally richen in which leaves all in tears and gasping for air. It depicts the notion of love’s great significance in an individual’s life and though being faced with obstacles and hardships it’s only then that love delivers its deepest rewards.
At no other time in my life can I recall ever seeing a movie so romantic, so uplifting, so emotional and so exciting. Who would have known that a little notebook could contain the greatest love story ever told. Never has a movie made me feel alive. The passion, screen chemistry and the emotion expressed in the film is captivating.
‘The Notebook’, is not just another romantic drama film but it is a movie that can be watched over and over again. Every aspect of emotion is endured and captured; may it be contentment, grief, anxiety and excitement or all. This film has a lot to offer. For its a lot of love and a lot of drama; I give this movie a rating of 4.5 out 5 for its 123 minute epic love story and clever time (past and present) shifts that leaves everyone reaching out for a tissue.
